CASUALTIES

MANY SOLDIERS WOUNDED IN
" THE GREAT BATTLE " .

Back in Blighty

" Heaven after the Hell over Yonder " .
..................................................................

Mrs H. Miller of 90 High Street Higham Ferrers, has heard from her son, Lance-Corpl. George William Miller, Northants Regt. That he was wounded on March 27th. and is now in hospital at St. Leonard ' s by the Sea. In the course of his letter he says; " Here I am in a splendid bed, and in one of the best and most comfortable places in England. My word it ' s heaven after that hell of a retreat over yonder. I have a small piece of shell in my right arm. I got hit by a shell that killed three of us and wounded four or five, so I was lucky once more, wasn ' t I? My word it lifted me up a little, but I managed to carry my poor chum from Kettering to safety. He has it rather stiff. We were standing to in a trench on a ridge just behind---- on the ---- and were expecting Fritz any minute to come over, and he was putting up his barrage on us, but I have heard since that our boys went out after him after I left. He caught lots of our chaps with his gunfire as they retired, but still we were holding him all right, and my word he ' s lost some men; everybody says the same. He didn ' t half mean doing this army in, but he ' s as far off as ever from it , and he won ' t now he has failed in this first week. " Lance-Corpl. Miller has now twice been wounded, but this is the first time he has got a Blighty. He has nearly four years of service to his credit, having joined the Colours in September of the year war broke out, and he has been in France nearly three years.

Notes
General:
Private Harry Miller regimental number 20210 was in the 1st /5th Battalion of the 5th Staffordshire Regiment. He died of wounds sustained during WW1. He was buried at that time, but his body was exhumed from German Grave 141 and reburied at the Valenciennes (St Roch) Communal cemetery in France. The cemetery is situated about 1.5 kms from the centre of Valenciennes on the north side of the road to Bruay-Susr-L'Escaut.

Only an estimated 30% - 40% of the WW1 British military service records have survived due to being destroyed by fire during Second World War bombings, and sadly Harry's record appears to be in the 60%- 70% that have been lost.

The marriage of another couple, John Sargeant and Deborah Brown is on the same page as Maria and James marriage. John & Deborah's daughter married Thomas Blackwell.

His occupation was mostly given as labourer for leather currier.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For other uses, see Currier (disambiguation).

A currier is a specialist in the leather processing industry. After the tanning process, the currier[1] applies techniques of dressing, finishing and colouring to the tanned hide to make it strong, flexible and waterproof. The leather is stretched and burnished to produce a uniform thickness and suppleness, and dyeing and other chemical finishes give the leather its desired colour.

After currying, the leather is then ready to pass to the fashioning trades such as saddlery, bridlery, shoemaking and glovemaking.

                2. William MILLER [7644] (1871-      )

Notes
General:
William married Ann Cox. Ann had two children prior to her marriage to William. Both children were christened at Higham Ferrers and there is no mention of a father in the baptism records.

The children were
1) Sarah Cox b Higham Ferrers in1841 married William Charles Linnett. Sarah d. Higham Ferrers in 1907 and
2) Charles Cox b. Higham Ferrers 1849 m. Ann Elizabeth Kilsby in 1872 and m. Henrietta Baker in 1877. Charles d. Higham Ferrers 1916.

On William and Ann's marriage certificate, Ann is listed as a spinster. Both William and Ann signed the register with their mark. Witnesses to the marriage were Frederick Cox (probably Ann's brother) and Susan Evans, who also signed with their mark. The marriage was carried out in the Parish Church by Banns by the Rector, George Miller (could this be William's brother George?).

William then married Eliza Jackson. Eliza also had two children
1) Joseph Jackson b.Stanwick, Northamptonshire in1856. Joseph was blind and spent some time in an institute for the blind and
2) William Thomas Jackson b. Stanwick in 1860.

Once again, Eliza is listed as a spinster on the marriage certificate. William signed with his mark and gives his age as 40 (he would have been approximately 52) on the certificate whilst Eliza signed her name and gave her age as 36 years. They were married at the Register Office by William Blands, Registrar and witnesses to the marriage were Sarah Stanton and Calob Matthews.

The Northampton Mercury 10 April 1891 page 8
Higham Ferrers Accident-On Thursday William Miller aged 73 fell from a floor in a warehouse sustaining serious injuries. He lies in a precarious condition.
It is assumed this is this William Miller.
