Mr. R. D. Ireland's nomination for North Gipps Land is quite certain. He purposes visiting the district during the next few days. His presence amongst the electors of that constituency will be sufficient to insure him a large majority. Mr. A. K. Smith intends to offer himself as a candidate for North Melbourne. The Beechworth people are determined to have two representatives in the Opposition interest, for which object a strong committed has been formed.

Another old colonist has gone from amongst us. Mr Alexander Brock, whose name will be familiar to most persons who are at all acquainted with the early history of pastoral settlement in Victoria, died this morning at his residence, Oak Hill, Preston, after, a brief illness. Mr Brock arrived in Tasmania with his father and family in 1835, and a year or two later came over to Port Phillip in the wake of the late Mr Faulkner, and took up land in the Western district. Subsequently, I believe, the deceased gentleman was engaged in squatting pursuits in partnership with Mr W. J. T. Clarke.

On 8 September 2006, while driving in the Targa West 2006 rally, Brock was 3 kilometres from the finish of the second stage of the race at Gidgegannup, about 40 km from Perth, Western Australia when he skidded off a downhill left-hand bend on Clenton Road for over 50 metres in his 2001 Daytona Sportscar and hit a tree. The 61-year-old Brock was killed instantly. His co-driver, Mick Hone, was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition. Video footage of the crash (provided by a fan and the in-car camera) was reviewed by Western Australian police to help determine the cause of the accident. Coroner Alastair Hope decided that his death was caused by high speed and that no coronal inquest would be performed.
