Private in the 47th Regiment

James Killum
WO 12 5900
Regt. No. 371 William Killum joined the 47th from England on 21 October 1827 and is listed as on his way to join the Regt. at Canterbury Barracks, Berhamporo, East India in the pay book entry for the period 1st to 30th November 1827. His muster is shown as 'Band'. There is no change to his status as a Private or his muster for the rest of his time in the Regt. till his death and no charges for misdemeanours. I presume the name William is a clerical error made before his arrival as all future entries give his first name as James. A possibility he had two given names? The spelling in all hand written entries in the original pay books is Killum. Interestingly the Certificate copying the entry for his marriage (1836) in the National Register is spelled Kellam.
WO 12 5910
December 1838 has Private James Killum in the Regimental Hospital (Malta) and his death occurred on 10th February 1839 (no cause shown). The entry for his death is shown in the same manner as for a discharge (people leaving the Regt.). Private James Killum Regt. No. 371 was born at Leixlip, Kildare, Ireland. His occupation at enlistment was a weaver. He enlisted on 14 August 1826 (must have either been at the home Depot Barracks or in a different Regt. before going to East India in 1827). His widow Sophia was paid 5s 9d and the children are listed as Mary Ann and Anne. From Ancestry.com via noellb_1 originally shared this on 31 Jan 2017

DEATH OF AN OLD COLONIST.
DEATH OF AN OLD COLONIST.

THE LATE MRS. HAYNES.

Mrs. Haynes, who died in Perth a few days ago, after a painful illness, was a very old colonist, and will be remembered for her many kindly deeds.

Mrs. Haynes, who was 58 years of age, came to the colony in 1851, in the ship Pyrenees, with her mother, sister, and step-father, Mr. William Glanville, officer in charge of the men on board.

Her mother died at Toodyay in October, 1852, at the birth of her second son.

On Nov. 9, 1859, Mrs. Haynes was married to Mr. William Henry Goldwyre, only son of the late Dr. Goldwyre, of Bristol, England. On the 30th of the same month, her only brother, William Pyrenees Glanville, who was born on the voyage out, was drowned in the Perth Boys' School pond, St. George's Terrace. This was afterwards filled in. Many of our residents, who were boys at about that period, will remember the murder of Mr. Goldwyre by natives in the Roebuck Bay district, while exploring with Messrs. Panter and Harding. By her mother's side, Mrs. Haynes was the granddaughter of the late Senor J. Gomez, and grand niece of the late General Gomez, of Madrid, and the late Nemerico Gomez, wine merchant, of Gibraltar. She leaves two daughters by her first marriage, and two by her second. Her funeral which took place on the 19th instant, at the Church of England, was largely attended. Among those present were a, number of prominent citizens, who desired to do honor to one who during her lifetime did so much in the cause of charity.

Wreaths and crosses were sent by Mrs. H. S. Bandford, the Misses Boladeras Miss Burges, Miss Oliver, Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. Payne and Miss Traylen. Mrs. Haynes' sister and her nephews were chief mourners. The funeral arrange ments were efficiently carried out by Mr D.J. Chipper.

Notes
General:
On the baptism of Thomas Arthur Best Kelly, Edwards name appears as Gustavas Adolphus William James Herbert Edward Kelly.

Obituary that appeared in a newspaper (probably a local paper from the Nhill area) after the death of Edward Kelly as follows:-

Mr Edward Kelly, one of the pioneer residents of the town, died suddenly at his residence, Church Hill at 2pm on Christmas day. Deceased appeared to be in his usual spirits until midday, when he stated that he was not feeling well. The cause of his death was syncope.

Born in New South Wales in 1855, he followed the occupation of shearing and dealing and was a good judge of stock.

He came to Nhill in 1884, and was one of the first to reside on an allotment adjoining the Lorquon road, and his memory is perpetuated by the naming of Kellytown, where he lived with his wife and family for many years.

His reminiscences of the old colonial days, and of the eighties in Nhill were interesting. He was on the Kalgoorlie gold field in 189?.

His quaint, brusque exterior covered a kindly disposition, and on many occasions he rendered good services to those who were in need of help.

Deceased leaves a wife and grown up family of 12 children, for whom the deepest sympathy is felt in the bereavement they have sustained.

The remains were interred in the Nhill cemetery on Boxing Day, when the burial service was conducted by Rev Father Daly of St Patrick's Church. Mr J Allen was the undertaker.
