The Last to Leave.
On Friday the 7th instant, after the audience had departed from the new picture theatre, an old gentleman was noticed to remain in his seat. It was thought he had gone to sleep, but Mr. Johnson, the manager, failed to arouse him. Failing to get any satisfaction or sense from the old gentleman, Mr. Johnson after applying first- aid remedies, took him to the Melbourne Hospital in a St. John's ambulance, where he was treated by Dr. Meade, who applied the electric battery. On returning to Port Melbourne during the early morning Sergeant Nugent recognised the old gentleman as Mr. Wm. Decis, residing at 274 Graham street. Decis, who is 83 years of age, on being conveyed to his residence, pulled around again.

Notes
General:
On Kathleen's 1894 marriage certificate to William Rogerson, she states that she was aged 20 years and born in Dublin, and that her father was William Decis (Gentleman) and mother was Ellen TULLOCH.

On her 1906 marriage certificate to John Bonham she states she is a spinster born Dublin Ireland, aged 34 years and that her father was William Decis Engine Driver and mother Ellen Boswick.

As William Decis and Ellen Bostock (Bostick) began having children in Melbourne in 1861 and had 7 registered children that I have found until 1876, it is unlikely Kathleen could have been born in Dublin if these were her parents. I have been unable to find the birth of Kathleen Ellen Decis in the period mentioned.

There are 12 children mentioned on the death certificate of Kathleen's mother in 1884, they are John 25, William 23, Mary Ann 22, Edward 20 , Herman (?) 18 , Sarah 17, Esther 15, Margaret 12, Ernest, 11 Kathleen 9 , Eliza dead and Constant 5.

Kathleen Decis Rogerson Bonham drowned in Saltwater Creek Melbourne (Maribyrniong River). She had been previously married to William Rogerson and had three children from that marriage.

ATTEMPT AT SUICIDE.
WOMAN LIES ACROSS TRAM TRACK
unknown; and mentally defective.
A sad case of attempted suicide came under, the notice - of the Melbourne Hospital authorities last/night, when a middle aged woman was brought to the institution by Constable Spottiswoode. . According to the constable's story, the woman, who gave several names when questioned, the one she most frequently mentioned being Ellen Rogerson was seen by a Mr. R. J. Lewis of Queen's-walk, to throw, herself in front of an advancing tram car as it rounded the curve at the corner of Spring and Collins streets. This was about 8.30 p.m. The gripman of the car - NO. 136, from Fitzroy - put the brakes on hard, and managed to pull up within two feet of the woman, who was lying at full length across the rails. Mr. Lewis rushed for ward and pulled her clear of the line, and Constable Spottiswoode arriving; he took her in charge. He drove with her to the city watch house, and from there she was removed to the hospital for observation.

Drs. Goldstein, and. Crookston were not long in ascertaining that she was not in her right mind, and she stated in answer to their questions that she had been, an inmate of Kew Asylum a year or so back. Communication with the asylum by telephone failed to lead to her identification, and she was detained at the institution for the night, pending information being obtained regarding her. She is about 5 feet 8 inches high; of rather attractive appearance, and has dark hair, Her clothing is poor, and from her wanderings of the, mind' it would appear as if she at one time, lived at Germanton. Her husband's Christian name is "Jack," and that of one of her children "Nelly."

So sadly missed.
Always unselfish, loving, and kind.
Few in this world her equal to find;
When her beautiful life came to an end
She died, as she lived, everyone's friend.

THE RECENT SAD DROWNING
ACCIDENT AT WANGARATTA.
The body of the little girl Nita Nicol who was accidentally drowned last Saturday week whilst attempting to save her little brother who had fallen into the Ovens River, was found last Saturday by the child's uncle, and a magisterial inquiry was held at the residence of Mrs. Dykes, templeton-street, Wangaratta, on Saturday night, before Mr. A. Pinker ton, JP., the following evidence being,
taken :-
J. L. Del'ora deposed : Am a store keeper in Templeton-street, Wangaratta. On Saturday, 19th inst., about noon, I heard a little boy and girl had fallen into the river, and 1 rushed to the bank of the Ovens River and saw the boy rise to the surface of the water. He was struggling in the river, and I threw off my coat and jumped into the river and swam to where the boy was. The boy sank before I got to the place, bub again came to the surface, and I grabbed him and swam to the bank with him." He was unconscious, and I worked his arms about, and he started to vomit and cough. Left him lying on his back to look after the little girl, who I had been told was in the river, but could not see her about. There were two little girls standing on the river bank. I swam in the river again, and dived near where 1 found the boy, but could not see any traces of the little girl. Mrs. Dykes then came to the bank of the river, and I asked her to take charge of the boy and sent the two little girls for the police, who came down and commenced dragging, and they were assisted in this by a number of people, many of them diving in the river to try and find the body. Efforts were also made to find the body on Sunday, and the search continued during the week. James B. Nichol deposed : Am a baker and butcher at Thoona. I came to Wangaratta about 2 o'clock to-day, and in company with my brother made a search of the Ovens River in search of the body of my niece, Nita Nicol, this being the eighth day from which she was drowned, and we thought the body might rise to the surface. We found the body near Flannery's paddock. Her clothes were tangled in the wattle, and we procured a pole and hook from Mr. Flannery so that we could hold the body until we got a boat, which was taken by Constable Corry, and my brother-in-law and myself to where the body was. The body was taken to the bank and conveyed home in a trap. I identify the body in the next room as that of my niece Nita Nichol. Effie O Brien, aged 7 years, said she was on the bank of the river last Saturday with Bryce and Nita Nicol and other little girls. Nita was fishing, and Bryce Nicol, aged 4 years threw a bag in the river and went in after it. Nita jumped in after him to try and save him, and floated away on her back. I ran up and told Emma Ah Cue who told Mr. Del'ora. John Martin Nicol deposed : Am a carpenter, residing at Templeton-street, Wangaratta. Am the father of the deceased child, Anita Nicol. Heard of the accident last Saturday afternoon, about half-past one o'clock. Was about six miles from Wangaratta at the time, and returned immediately. There was a great crowd on the river bank searching for the body, and I have used over 70 charges of explosives in the river to try and bring the body to the surface. - Nita was seven years old on the 27th August last. Went down the river today with my brother in law (Frank Gale) to try and find the body, following my brothers, who found the body near Flannery's paddock.
A verdict of accidental drowning was returned.

Ovens and Murray Advertiser (Beechworth, Vic. : 1855 - 1918) Sat 22 Feb 1902 Page 11
The police at Wangaratta are searching for a man who is supposed to be a Frenchman, who is suspected of having bean guilty of attempted fire-raising at South Wangaratta on Sunday evening.

The man called at the farm of Mr. J. Delloro after sundown, and after being given food, asked to be allowed to stay on the premises for the night. He was shown to a shed, but the accommodation offered evidently displeased him as he returned to the house and abused Mr. and Mrs. Delloro for suggesting that he might sleep in such a place. He displayed considerable temper, and eventually walked off. He was watched across the paddocks, and shortly after he passed a fire was observed, but Mr. Delloro and some neighbors were quickly on the spot and extinguished the flames, but not before an acre of grass had been burnt.

WANGARATTA.- A fire occurred at a small grocery store, occupied by Mr. J. L. Delloro, shortly after midnight on Saturday. The whole of the stock was consumed, and the building was completely gutted. It is not known how the fire originated. The stock was insured in the Imperial Fire Assurance Company for £60, and the damage to the shop (owned by Mr. Michael O'Neill), was fully covered by a policy issued by the Colonial Mutual Company.
