Death of Mr G D Blackwell
Mr Gilbert Darlow Blackwell who passed away in the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital on August 26th after suffering from poor health over the past 12 months, was an old Nar Nar Goon Resident.
He was the eldest son of the Late Mr. William Blackwell, who conducted a boot and repair shop in Mulcare Street, Nar Nar Goon for very many years.
Gilbert Blackwell was born at Kettering, Northamptonshire, In England in 1895, and migrated to Australia with his parents and brothers and sisters at the age of 15 years, arriving in Australia in 1910. [actually December 1911].
The family took up farming at Allambee in South Gippsland till 1912 and then moved to Nar Nar Goon, where Mr William Blackwell purchased the boot business.
Gilbert worked at various occupations (farm work etc.) around Nar Nar Goon until the out-break of war in 1914, when he enlisted in the A.I.F. and served with the 4th Vickers Machine Gun Battalion in France for the full period to the end of the War in 1918.
Whilst awaiting repatriation to come back to Australia, he spent leave in England and returned to the place of his birth, Kettering and married a former school pal. He brought his bride back to Australia in 1919 and took up residence at Ormond. He was engaged in the trade of coach painting and sign writing in which he was a top class tradesman, for many years and he took over the business of Grant Bros. body works, coach painting and sign writing in Station Street, Malvern, which he conducted successfully till he retired in 1965.
Whilst he resided in Ormond he and his wife were actively associated with sporting bodies.
His greatest love was his Church, and he was very active in the Church of Christ in North Road, Ormond, from 1922 till his death. He served in every conceivable way - Sunday School teacher, Bible classes, secretary, superintendent - he was indeed a very Christian man which was shown by the huge attendance at the Church service and the wonderful tributes paid him by the Minister.
Mr Blackwell's wife predeceased him two years [actually five years] ago after a marriage lasting 50 years. He is survived by two married daughters - Mrs M Knee, of Ormond, and Mrs J MacMillan [sic] of Yarra Glen; sisters, Miss Phyllis Blackwell, Nar Nar Goon, Mrs E Jones, Dandenong, brothers Mr R Blackwell, Clayton, Mr P Blackwell, Dandenong, and Mr E Blackwell Nar Nar Goon.
Mr Blackwell always kept in touch with all the local doings and up to his illness, always came up to Nar Nar Goon at every opportunity. His passing will be a sad loss to all as he was always a cheery and happy gentleman." 1174,1175

Wedding Bells
Towt - Blackwell
Fortune smiled and the sun shone for the wedding on Saturday of Pax, eldest daugther of the late Mr D Blackwell, and of Mrs Blackwell, of Garfield, and Kenneth, only son of Mr and Mrs P Towt of Bunyip.
The bride who was given away by her grandfather, Mr Blackwell, of Nar Nar Goon, wore a long-sleeved dress of fine french wool with three parallel rows of white embroidered flowers. Her extensive tulle veil was held with fresh flowers matching those that formed her bouquet and trail.
She was attended by Misses Pearl Blackwell and Angela Connelly, who were charmingly frocked in blue net the short veils being held with head-sprays of deep pink rose-buds, carnations and blue hyacinths. The bouquets matched the head-sprays and were finished with wide blue ribbon. Both wore pearls.
The best man and groomsman were Messrs Morris Lobb and Ian Forte respectively, and the service was taken by the Rev. N McLean, who later presided when the guests were entertained to a sumptious banquet in the Garfield Hall. The bridal party left for Warragul, where the wedding photos were taken in the studio of Mr Frank Prinn.
The many friends of the popular young couple wished them every hapiness for future years, when they wil make their home at North Bunyip.

On arrival from England, Inez remained in Melbourne as there was no work at Allambee for her. She worked for a Church of England Minister at Malvern. She travelled to Nar Nar Goon from time to time to visit her family. Apparently, Inez's stepmother was very hard on her. One day whilst Inez was visiting her family at Nar Nar Goon, Inez and Ada Primrose had an argument and Inez left.
Inez returned home once and was greeted in an unfriendly manner on the doorstep by one of her half sisters and had an argument with her step mother. At this she turned on her heel and left. By the time her brother went after her, there was no sign of her and she never contacted her family again.
Despite exhaustive searching for details no trace or Inez had ever been found and the family thought it possible that Inez returned to England, however no-one knew for sure.
In January 2012 I decided to renew the search for Inez and found her in the electoral rolls in 1919 living at 10 Kent Street, Kew, Victoria. Her occupation was listed as confectioners assistant. I then found a marriage of an Inez B Blackwell to Eric W Williams in Sydney, NSW and decided to apply for the marriage certificate. I did a search of the electoral rolls and Inez Beatrice Williams lived at "Kianinni, Cornelia Street, Punchbowl from approximately 1931 although was unable to find that her husband Eric was living at the same address at any time from 1931 onwards. In 1943 her address was listed as 43 Cornelia Street Punchbowl and the address remains consistent until 1968. I searched deaths from 1968 and found the death of Inez Williams in 1979 in NSW and her parents are listed as William and Evangeline. So after all these years we have finally located the missing Inez. Inez husband died after only a few years of marriage and they had no children.
Marriage and death certificates arrived on 16 January 2012. The marriage certificate states that Eric was a Commercial Traveller who lived at Gordon, and that Inez normal occupation was home duties and she was living at Wentworth Falls at the time of the marriage. They were married at St James Church of England in Sydney and the witnesses to the marriage were William H Willington and W Willington.
Inez died in a nursing home at Aurolus Street, Ryde. Her marital status on the death certificate is given as widow, and she was cremated at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium in Sydney.
There was a death notice placed in The Sydney Morning Herald on 19 of April 1979 from her dearly loved friends, Shirley and Bill and nana to Jill and Sharon. The notice says she was privately cremated. I contacted the crematorium where Inez was said to have been cremated, but they could find no record of her cremation.

Notes
General:
NOTE: DEC 2023: I have found a John Blackwell baptised 09 Aug 1795 at Yarwell, Northamptonshire, son of Francis and Frances Blackwell (nee Barker), who is a very likely candidate to be this John Blackwell. I have added them to the DNA tree but I am awaiting confirmation via DNA as to whether they are the likely parents of this John or whether this is not our John's parents at all. John Blackwell and Ruth Clarke were married at Wilby. Francis and Frances Blackwell also had a son Francis who was also married at Wilby a few years after John and Ruth were married there, this has reinforced my thinking that Francis and Frances may be John's biological parents. Francis Jnr and his wife lived in the Earls Barton area until their deaths.
12 Dec 2023: Today I have woken to find several DNA matches with Geoff Blackwell and other descendants of Francis and Frances Blackwell, proving my theory to be 100% correct. It's party time after 40 years to find them at last.
BIOGRAPHY:
John's birth is estimated to be about 1796. All records including death and censuses, indicate birth between 1792-1802. His occupation was shoemaker.
All the children of John and Ruth were christened under the surname of Black, which is why they had not been found. Jan Dabson supplied me with christening details from registers she has in her possession. I have since confirmed all the christening details supplied by Jan.
A Mary Fisher was in attendance at the death of John Blackwell.
John and Ruth's three adult children who died after compulsory registration was introduced, died of Tuberculosis. Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection of the lungs and sometimes other parts of the body, and is spread by droplets in the coughs or sneezes of a person with the disease. Tuberculosis was known as 'consumption' in the 19th century and was a major cause of death in Britain at that time. The disease is still common where there is overcrowding, malnourishment and poor health care.
Tuberculosis, also known as "consumption," "phthisis," or the "white plague," was the cause of more deaths in industrialized countries than any other disease during the 19th and early 20th centuries. By the late 19th century, 70 to 90% of the urban populations of Europe and North America were infected with the TB bacillus, and about 80% of those individuals who developed active tuberculosis died of it.
For most of the 19th century, tuberculosis was thought to be a hereditary, constitutional disease rather than a contagious one. By the end of the 19th century, when infection rates in some cities were thought by public health officials to be nearly 100%, tuberculosis was also considered to be a sign of poverty or an inevitable outcome of the process of industrial civilization. About 40% of working-class deaths in cities were from tuberculosis.
Robert Koch's identification of the tuberculosis bacillus in 1882 helped to convince members of the medical and public-health communities that the disease was contagious. Preventing the spread of tuberculosis became the motivation for some of the first large-scale public health campaigns.
Mortality rates began declining in the late 19th century throughout Europe and the United States. Whether sanitary measures, sanatoria, improved nutrition, or larger epidemiological factors unrelated to human intervention were the cause of this decline remains undecided. ocp.hul.harvard.edu/contagion/tuberculosis.html
In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Higham Ferrers like this:
HIGHAM-FERRERS, a small town, a parish, a subdistrict, and a hundred in Northamptonshire. The town stands on a rocky height, near the river Nene and the Northhampton and Peterborough railway, 3 miles from the boundary with Beds, and 15½ ENE of Northhampton. It was known, at Domesday, as Higham; and it took its after name from the Earls Ferrers, who were its lords. Its site has yielded relics which show it to have been probably occupied by the Romans; and is within 3 miles of the Roman station of Chester.
