Notes
General:
in November 2018 I discovered that John Elijah Jones (Howells) stated that he had a cousin living in Cottosloe Western Australia. His cousins name was given as Margretta Dore.
On researching Margretta Dore, I find that her father was William Glanville, an Army Officer who travelled widely. It is uncertain if William Glanville is the brother of Mary Glanville, but for the purposes of this exercise I have added them as siblings until proof or otherwise can be found as to the relationship of Margretta (Margaret) Dore and Michael Cronan and John E Jones (Howells).
No date of birth has yet been found for William Glanville, but his army records state he was born in St Andrews, Devon. He enlisted on 3 February 1831 in the 85th Regiment and transferred to the 47th on 2 May 1831. His occupation at enlistment was brush maker. William's regiment was stationed in Scotland, Ireland, Gibraltar, Malta, Barbados, St Kitts, and England during his time in the Army. He was discharged at his own request on 15th March 1849 in Limerick, Ireland with a gratuity of on years pay. In the last year of his service he was detached to move around the UK on recruitment duties in Cornwall, Devon, Truro, and Redruth.
He is supposed to have come to Australia on the ship the prison ship Pyrenees in 1851 as a warder, but I have not been able to find his name recorded on the manifests so far. Also on Board was his wife Sofia and the children. Sophia supposedly giving birth to William Pyrenees Glanville on 1 January 1851 on that ship.
After Sophia's death in about 1852 or 1853, William was said to have returned to England and re-enlisted and fought in the Crimean War, however I have so far found no evidence of that. All the children and step children remained in Western Australia and no record can be found of William's death in Australia, or elsewhere.
Some stories have it that William vanished in the West Indies, but again, I have no evidence of this.
Is this William when he is supposed to have re-enlisted on his return to England?

I have found the death of a William Glanville, in 1890 (aged 68 years) who is a naval pensioner of Kingston, England. The certificate states that William died at the Royal Portsmouth and Gosport Hospital after being accidentally run over by a cart. His death is recorded as 26 November 1890. There was an inquest held into his death on 28th November 1890. If this is the correct William, it would make him only about 9 years old at his first enlistment (see transcript below), so it is possible it is not the correct person.
WO 12 5920
Sergeant William Glanville Regimental number 876 85/800 was discharged at his own request on 15 March 1849 in Limerick Ireland with a gratuity of one years pay, he was born at St Andrews Devon, he enlisted 3 February 1831 in 85th Regt. and transferred to 47th on 2 May 1831, his occupation at enlistment was brush maker.
WO 12 5902
Entry at time of transfer to 47th (2 May 1831) refers to a document 4.79 which I could not locate. This presumably explains his odd regimental number 876 for the 47th followed by the 85/800 which is number 800 in the 85th Regt. This odd mix followed him till his discharge. The Regt. was posted all over the place.

1832 Edinburgh
1832 Castleblaney Ireland

1844 Presumably in England as he married Sophia (nee Gomez) in Daventry (Sophia must have followed the Regt. from St Kitts where William Duck left her a widow)

1846 Charleville Ireland
1847 Glevasheew

Coroner's Inquest.
(Before T. N. Yule Esq., J.P., Coroner.)
An inquest was hold at the old Steam Mill, Perth, on Wednesday last, on the body of a child named William Glanville, who was drowned in a pond adjoining the Government School. The Jury having been sworn, the first witness called was De Courcy Hillman - a student at the Government School, about 10 o'clock on that morning he asked permission from his master to go out, when he got in sight of the pond at the back of the school house, he saw the heels of a person above the surface of the water. He did not see the body, he took no particular notice of it. About a minute afterwards a black boy who lives at the Bishop's, cried out, Willy Glanville is drowning" He ran down and took off his trousers and waistcoat and jumped in and swam about. After a little time he touched the body with his feet. Mr Farmer at that moment came and by diving found the body. About 4 minutes had elapsed from the time that be first noticed the heels on the surface till the body was recovered by Mr Farmer. There were other boys bathing with deceased, he had no reason to believe that the other boys pushed him into the pond.
Thomas Farmer- Said he jumped into the pool and on diving the second time he succeeded in finding thee body and brought on shore ; to all appearances the child was dead. About 20 minutes after the body had been brought on shore Dr Arden, of the 12th Regiment, arrived and for 2 1/4 hours endeavoured to resuscitate the body, but previously to his arrival Mr G. Shenton was present, under whose direction the child was placed in a warm bath. The general depth of the pond is from 4 to 5 feet, but in some places it is 6 feet; there is no boy in the school who is able to walk across the pond.
Johnny, a Native boy-Deposed that he lives at the Bishop's ; he was at the pond on Wednesday morning about 10 o'clock, he heard Willy Glanville say that he would swim across the pond, he told him not to do so as he did not think that he could; when he got about half way across he cried out for help, he saw him come up and go down several times, he swam in to his assistance, but he sank before he reached him and never rose again. The Jury returned a Verdict of "Accidentally Drowned," and recorded their wish that the Government should take immediate steps to have the pond either filled up or drained, as it was highly dangerous not only to the school boys but to the children of the town generally.

GLANVILLE. - In sacred and loving memory of William Pyrenees Glanville, who was drowned in the school pond, St. George's-terrace, Perth, W.A., November 30, 1859.
We loved him, how we loved him.
But our Savior loved him best;
And because he was so weary.
Bore him home to Heaven to rest.
There his mother dear was waiting,
On that happy peaceful shore;
Far away from earth's temptations,
There to dwell for evermore.

OLD PERTH BOYS' SCHOOL
To the Editor.
Sir,-In "The West Australian" of March 9 a letter appears from Mr. A. Douglas protesting against the pulling down of the old boys' school in St. George's-terrace. I, as an old scholar of the school, also ask it be allowed to stand, as a landmark of the past. Mr. Douglas, who has a very good knowledge of past events, is very much astray this time when he stated that the boy who was drowned in the school pond was named Weir. This is not correct, as the name was William Glanville, an only brother of my mother, the late Mrs. Margaretta Dore, of Cottesloe.-Yours, etc.. Mandurah. W. W. EDWARDS.

David Godber was born in Diamond Creek on 29th October, 1863, the second son of Robert and Martha Godber. When he was 24 he married Mary Ann Stewart (born at Bulleen) on 20th October, 1887. I understand that he worked at carting produce from Diamond Creek to Melbourne. In about 1896 David went to W.A. to see if there was work there for his horse team. The W.A. Goldfields were booming and people were flocking there from everywhere.
David took his team to the Swan River Colony by ship to Fremantle. He told my brother once that "he had no time to be sea sick" on a very rough voyage as he had to stay up on deck and control his very frightened horses. He carted goods first from Southern Cross and then up Menzies and Kookynie way.
Mary Ann and the three girls followed him in 1898 and Angus was born in 1900. They lived on the Goldfields for 10 or more years. Several of David's brothers came over to the Goldfields too - George, Jim and Robert. Jim and Robert went back to Victoria but David and George stayed in the West.
When David's family left the Goldfields they lived for a time in West Perth and then they bought a little orchard property in Gosnells where they resided until 1920 and then transferred to Victoria Park.
David Godber was a splendid old man; he was interested in everything and full of yarns about the early days. David died in 1954 in his 91st year.

Notes
General:
Francis (Frank) was married twice.
The marriage certificate of Frank and Caroline Shooter shows that Francis Godber was 20 years old, and a collier living at Sot's (?) Hole, his father was John Godber whose occupation is given as FWK (Frame work knitter??) and Caroline aged 17 seamer living at The Hollow, father being John Shooter, Labourer. Neither Francis nor Caroline could write and witnesses were Samuel Soars ??? and Charlotte Shooter. They were married by William Goodacre, Curate of the Parish Church at Sutton in Ashfield.
Frank and Caroline were married in November 1849. On January 17th 1850 Caroline gave birth to a baby daughter who was named Francis. Baby Francis died the following day and Caroline died 2 days later on the 20th of January.
Frank then married Margaret (Peggy) Boot (Godber). in 1852

Notes
General:
in the 1851 Census, Hannah is living with her step mother and family. She is said to be of "weak Intellect" and possibly is deaf.
I have found a death in 1909 of a Hannah Godber who was in the Castlemaine Benevolent Asylum at the time of her death. Her age is correct and the time in Victoria is stated as 59 years, which also matches the approximate time of arrival of Job and Mary Godber and family to Victoria. Parents are unknown, and all other details are unknown, but I assume it to be the correct Hannah.
