TROOPER JOHN JOSEPH BANNAN.
Sincere regret was expressed in Berwick and Beaconsfield when the sad news was received that Trooper John J. Bannan, late of Berwick, of the 8th Light Horse Regiment, had died of malaria fever in hospital at Damascus, in Palestine, on 16th October. Trooper Bannan had been in action for three years and five months, and leaves a wife and two young children to mourn their loss. The deceased soldier, who was 29 years of age, was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Denis Bannan, of Kerang, old and highly respected residents of that district, with whom the deepest sympathy is felt, as two other sons, Frank and Willie, were killed in action in France in August, 1916. May their souls rest in peace.

'Erratic driving' before two died
A WITNESS in the Coroner's Court yesterday alleged that a truck was being driven erratically before a smash in which two elderly women were fatally hurt in Normanby rd., South Melbourne, on April 15.
George Edward Mair, fumigator, of Brougham Ave., Kew, driver of the utility truck, has been charged with manslaughter.
The witness, John Fortune Conrick, fitter and turner, of Acland st.. St. Kilda, was giving evidence at the inquest into the deaths of Mrs. Minnie Veronica Young, 68, of Williamstown rd., Port Melbourne, and Miss Brigid Agnes Frawley, 61, of Raglan st.. Port Melbourne.
John Robert Pettiona, 21, taxi driver, said the two women were passengers in his taxi.
"Take it easy"
They told him to "take it easy" and he was travelling at 25 m.p.h. along Normanby rd., when an approaching truck went on to its wrong side.
He added: "I swung on to my wrong side, or we would have 'copped the lot.' "
Pettiona said he had been driving only two weeks before the accident.
Under cross-examination he said later that he had since been in a triple car accident involving Sir Dallas Brooks, Governor, on Beach rd., Brighton.
Mrs. Margaret Ellen Frawley, barmaid, of Blyth st., East Brunswick, who was also in the taxi, and was seriously hurt, gave evidence from a stretcher.
Detective John Duncan McKenzie, read a signed statement alleged to have been made by Mair.
Mair's alleged statement said that he swung the truck to the left to avoid an oncoming car, but did not remember anything further until he heard women screaming.
Mr. Burke, S.M., coroner, found that Mrs. Young and Miss Frawley died from injuries received when the truck by misadventure collided with a taxi.
Mr. Burke said he was not prepared to say on the evidence that a prima facie case, of manslaughter had been made out. 801

I HEREBY give notice that I have applied, under the 42nd Section of the "Amending Land Act, 1865," for a licence to occupy 60 acres of land situated on allotment 27, parish of Poorneet, county of Grenville. The Government Contract Surveyor is Mr C.A. C. Wilson.
SARAH BANNAN,
Shelford.
Although the story below states that Sarah married Donald McKinnon in 1873, I have found no marriage record. Sarah did have two children, one in 1873 and one in 1875 that have no father mentioned on the birth certificates and the surnames are registered as Bannan.

Mrs. Sarah McKinnon, relict of the late Donald McKinnon, who held the honour of being the oldest woman living in the district, and also ranked amongst the old residents, died on Friday evening at her home at West Hay, where she had lived for forty two years. Mrs. McKinnon was a native of Geelong, and was married to the late Mr. McKinnon at Geelong in 1873. Her husband was in the employ of the late Sir Samuel Wilson at Ercildoune and Marathon stations in Victoria, being head studmaster: He also managed Ardnowest station, near Mount Gambier. The family came to Hay about 1882, and Mr. McKinnon was first employed on Burrabogie. He subsequently followed station callings in various parts of the district, and died at Hay on 3rd February; 1928, in his eightieth year. Mrs. McKinnon was 93 and a half years old at the time of her death, and although for some time she had not been able to move about much, she, enjoyed fairly good , health. A heart attack developed on Thursday, and she passed away next evening. Notwithstanding her great age she retained a remarkably accurate recollection of all outstanding happenings during her long life, and was keenly interested in all that was, going on around her.
She is survived by one son (Mr Lachlan McKinnon, and three daughters (Mrs. W. J. Fahey, Mrs. B Hugh B. Ross, and Mrs J Connor of Hay). One (son, John, a returned soldier, and one daughter, Mrs McCutcheon, pre deceased her. There are 23 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. granddaughter, Sister Connor, is on active service overseas.
The funeral took place on Sunday and was largely attended by friends of the family. The burial was in the Presbyterian ground in the grave of her late husband. The service was conducted by the Rev. H D Mackie There were many very beautiful floral tributes.
The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. Ron Wall.

General:
There was a Thomas Joseph Bannan who was living at Winton siding near Hughenden in 1913. He is the only Thomas Bannan I can find in the electoral rolls at this time.
I have also found a Thomas Bannon who lived in the Mount Morgan area around the times the other Bannan brothers lived in Queensland.
