THE Union Hotel at Netherby, belonging to Mr. J. Franklin, of Lorquon, was completely destroyed by fire on Saturday night. A lamp in a room leading to the bar exploded, and the paper of the walls and ceiling ignited. Though there were over thirty men on the premises, all efforts to stay the progress of the flames were ineffectual, and in less than half an hour the roof fell in. It was with much difficulty that the children, who were in bed, were rescued. The hotel was insured in the Commercial Union office for 1800.

The following account of a sensational bolt at Jeparit last Monday is given by the Warracknabeal "Herald ":-While the groom (in the buggy) was walking the horses waiting for Mr. James Franklin, of Hopetoun House, the animals became restive, finally getting into a gallop. The groom stuck to the reins, but turning a corner too quickly the vehicle was overturned. In this way the horses continued their career, the buggy being dragged along for a considerable distance on the seat iron. Turning another angle the buggy in an extraordinary manner was turned completely over on to the wheels again. The horses still galloping madly on took their course along a road used for water-carting leading straight into the river. About 30 feet from the river bank, however, a fence has recently been erected, with a slip panel, and which connects a paddock on either side. This, probably, saved the horses' lives, as coming down an incline at a rapid rate, in endeavoring to get through the opening, the vehicle crashed into the post, smashing-the wheel to atome, an temporarily checking the horses, who thus were set free. Had they negotiated the opening safely, they must inevitably have gone into the river, and both probably been drowned. The groom escaped with a severe shaking, but the buggy was considerably damaged.

Mr. and Mrs. James Franklin, of Hopetoun House Hotel, who are leaving Jeparit, for Warracknabeal, were on Wednesday evening entertained at a farewell social in the Mechanics' Hall, when Mr. Franklin was presented with a eulogistically-worded valedictory address and Mrs. Franklin with a handsome silver card tray.

Melbourne, to-day Dimboola to Rainbow, and Warracknabeal to Hopetoun, are the only railway lines remaining interrupted. It is not anticipated that these two services will be restored until Saturday. Among the poor families at Horsham many are without a stick of furniture, and others have only the clothes they are wearing. Both banks of the Wimmera River have been damaged, and the water is pouring through the breaches. Unless it subsides soon it is feared that the weir will give way.

Mr. G. Coop, of South Brighton, near Horsham, had his sheep washed from one paddock to another, and only saved 60 out of 300. Mr. R. Mills lost 160, and Mr. McGee lost a great number.
The funeral of Mr. James Franklin, at Warracknabeal, was carried out under difficulties. The flood being at its height on the cemetery road, the cortege was compelled to go through private property to escape the on-rushing waters.

The cemetery at Kerang was saved after continuous work.

The damage by floods at Horsham is estimated at over 5000. Some of the flooded cottages present a pitiable sight, many of them having been inundated to a depth of 5ft. The walls have been denuded of paper, the furniture has ruined, and in some instances the weight of water has broken through the weatherboards. Many of them are dangerously undermined.

I think this is how it goes, but this is a tangled story. There seems to be some name interchanging.

John married Harriett Lavinia Thompson b.1850 NSW- d.1903 Chillagoe Qld.

Their eldest child died in Victoria, and then they seem to have lived in NSW for some time. John Trafalgar Franklin was bankrupted in July 1893 address given as "The Pocket, Brunswick, NSW". They seem to have moved to Queensland. Births of children do not seem to have findable registrations under the surname Franklin or Thompson. At some stage John's name seems to have been changed to William John Franklin and Walter John Franklin. His children sometimes give his name as John Trafalgar and yet it appears as William John Franklin and sometimes Walter John in other documents. I have been unable to find a marriage for Harriett Lavinia Thompson and a Franklin to date.

Death of An Old Pioneer.
Died at Mareeba on Tuesday afternoon an old identity of North Queensland, and a man of sterling worth, in the person of Mr. William John Franklin, at the age of 64 years. Deceased was for several years connected with the mining and cattle industry in the Chillagoe, Mt Garnet and Bamford districts, where he was highly respected. During recent years he had been a resident of Cairns, where he conducted the business of the Central Hotel in conjunction with his son in-law, Mr. Mark Olsen [Oleson]. The late Mr. Franklin was proceeding to the Tommy Burns mine, where he still held considerable interests, but he was taken suddenly ill on Thursday evening at Mareeba, and became an inmate of the local hospital, where he gradually sank and passed away on Tuesday in the presence of various members of his family, consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Olsen [Oleson], Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Franklin, and Mr. John Franklin. DIVORCE COURT.
FRANKLIN V. FRANKLIN.
On the ground of desertion, Fanny Franklin, 28 years, of Swan Hill, sought a divorce from Llewellyn Franklin, 32 years. Mr. Hobday appeared for petitioner. The parties were married on 30th February, 1895, by the Rev. W; Harris,

DIVORCE COURT.
FRANKLIN V. FRANKLIN.
Fanny Franklin, 28 years of age, of Swan Hill, sought a dissolution of her marriage with Llewellyn Franklin, 32 years of age. Mr. Hobday, who appeared for the petitioner, said that the parties were married in 1895 at Swan Hill. In 1899 they were living on the Darling River, in New South Wales, and respondent left her to look for work.
Petitioner had heard from him only once. Mr. Justice A' Beckett said that some difficulty had arisen in his mind as to the question of domicile. He would grant a decree nisi, but he doubted if any other judge would do so. (Laughter.) Care was necessary in preparing cases of this sort.

Death 1956 Queensland but there is a birth of a Llewellyn James Franklin in Queensland so it is likely to be that person and not Llewellyn Franklin

'Erratic driving' before two died
A WITNESS in the Coroner's Court yesterday alleged that a truck was being driven erratically before a smash in which two elderly women were fatally hurt in Normanby rd., South Melbourne, on April 15.
George Edward Mair, fumigator, of Brougham av., Kew, driver of the utility truck, has been charged with manslaughter.
The witness, John Fortune Conrick, fitter and turner, of Acland st.. St. Kilda, was giving evidence at the inquest into the deaths of Mrs. Minnie Veronica Young, 68, of Williamstown rd., Port Melbourne, and Miss Brigid Agnes Frawley, 61, of Raglan st.. Port Melbourne.
John Robert Pettiona, 21, taxi driver, said the two women were passengers in his taxi.
"Take it easy"
They told him to "take it easy" and he was travelling at 25 m.p.h. along Normanby rd., when an approaching truck went on to its wrong side.
He added: "I swung on to my wrong side, or we would have 'copped the lot.' "
Pettiona said he had been driving only two weeks before the accident.
Under cross-examination he said later that he had since been in a triple car accident involving Sir Dallas Brooks, Governor, on Beach rd., Brighton.
Mrs. Margaret Ellen Frawley, barmaid, of Blyth st., East Brunswick, who was also in the taxi, and was seriously hurt, gave evidence from a stretcher.
Detective John Duncan McKenzie, read a signed statement alleged to have been made by Mair.
Mair's alleged statement said that he swung the truck to the left to avoid an oncoming car, but did not remember anything further until he heard women screaming.
Mr. Burke, S.M., coroner, found that Mrs. Young and Miss Frawley died from injuries received when the truck by misadventure collided with a taxi.
Mr. Burke said he was not prepared to say on the evidence that a prima facie case, of manslaughter had been made out.
