Porter's Prompt Act
After he had been in the water for almost 10 minutes, Jack Corlett, aged about 45 years, of Dover street, Newmarket, was rescued from the Yarra about 10 a.m. yesterday. A crowd watched the rescue.
It is believed that Corlett fell from Princes Bridge. K. Lodington, a senior porter, who was on duty on the St. Kilda platform of the Flinders Street railway station overlooking the river, ran across Princes Bridge to a ferry owned by Melbourne Ferries (Harding's) Pty. Ltd. In charge of W. Waldron, assisted by Walter Barford, the ferry travelled to where Corlett was struggling in the water, near the western end of the St. Kilda platform.
Barford, who is aged 21 years, removed his clothes, and rescued Corlett as he was sinking from exhaustion. Corlett was admitted to the Homeopathic Hospital for treatment for immersion. His condition is not serious.

I have been unable to find the birth of an Emma Barkell in Tavistock or the Channel Island's that would match this child's age on the shipping records and on her death certificate. On the shipping records from 1857 Emma's age is given as 9, and in the 1851 census of the Channel Islands her age is given as 2 and her surname was recorded as Emma Barkell, step daughter of John Perkins. When she died Emma's age is recorded as 10 years old which would have made her born about 1848.

OBITUARY.
The death took place on Tuesday night of Mr. John Barkell at his residence, Queen-street hotel, at the age of 63 years. The deceased gentleman, who was a native of Devonshire, came to this State when only nine years old. About five years ago he arrived in Bendigo, and entered into the hotel business, which he successfully conducted up to the time of his death. On account of his characteristically genial and benevolent nature, he became well and favorably known. He was a member of the local Licensed Victuallers' Association, Druids' Lodge, and Walkers' Association. He had a host of friends in Kerang, where he resided for 22 years, and conducted a large dining room and wine cafe. He was a trustee of the Kerang Agricultural Society, and was prominently associated with cricketing, racing, and other sporting bodies there. His health for the past 18 months had been failing, and at times it caused intense physical suffering, which he bore patiently and bravely. He leaves a widow and family of two sons and four daughters to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and kind father. The funeral will take place to the Bendigo Cemetery to-day at 3.30 p.m 836

PIONEER PASSES.
After a lingering illness, death claimed Mrs Mary Anne Holman, who resided with her son at Berringa, at the advanced age of 81 years. The deceased, who was of an unassuming disposition, had been an invalid for some time. The remains were conveyed to Bendigo, and were interred in the Eaglehawk cemetery, the burial service being conducted by Rev W. J. Bottoms. There is 2 possibilities for the death of William Barkell, there is a death in June 1848 at Tavistock, Devonshire, England. However I have recently found the death of a William Barkell of the correct age, said to be from Tavistock, Devonshire, a miner who was killed in Sark, Channel Islands in 1845.
As William's wife had another baby in 1848, it is possible that the Tavistock death is the more likely of the two deaths.

On Friday evening the 30th ult. the Nassington carrier (Mrs Blackwell), on her return from Stamford market, was stopped near Whitewater toll-bar by two ruffians who demanded her money As she happened to have her son (a lad ) and another person riding in the cart with her, a dispute and struggle arose with the highwaymen, during which the Newcastle coach was fortunately heard to approach, on which the offenders made off towards Barnack, without having effected a robbery.
