Death of an Old Colonist.
Our correspondent at 'Greenvale,'
Cross Roads, writes: - With great regret I record the death of Mrs.Grace Quirk, which sad event took place on Sunday, the 13th ult. The deceased lady, who had attained the great age of 84 years, was born in Queen's County, Ireland. She was a colonist of 66 years standing, having landed in Australia with her brothers, Messrs. Denis and Michael Costigan on the 4th of October, 1841, by the ship Inmore. She was married in 1846 at Geelong to the late Mr. Michael Quirk, who was a shipmate. They resided in the Geelong district, near Mt. Moriac, where Mr. Quirk carried on farming pursuits until 1861 they when they went out to Bunyip Station (in the Wimmera district), then owned by Mr. L. Ryan, his brother-in-law, - also a shipmate. They remained there four years, when Mr. Quirk made up his mind to come to New South Wales, and they arrived at Albury in October, 1865. They selected land near Jindera, in the Albury district, where they resided for many years. After her husband's death, which took place in Albury in January, 1876, Mrs. Quirk resided with her family at Goombargana, where they had taken up land. About the year 1880 they sold out there, and selected on Mittagong run, near Yerong Creek, where she lived with her sons and daughters until 1897. She then came to the Wagga district to reside with her daughter, Mrs. D. McNamara, of Clare Valley Farm, where she remained till the time of her death. Mrs. Quirk had a family of nine children - four sons and five daughters - seven of whom survive her, viz., Patrick D. Quirk, Collingullie ; John Quirk, Greenvale, Cross Roads; Mrs. McCluskey, The Rock; Michael Quirk, Matong ; Mrs. W. Kelly, Nagambie, Viet. ; and Mrs. W. Walsh, Wagga. She also leaves 41 grandchildren. Her end was very peaceful, and her death bed was surrounded by sons and daughters, - grandchildren and nieces. Her eldest son and daughter, Timothy J. Quirk, late of Ungaree, Humbug, and Mrs. Bridget Dunleavy, of Bulgandra, predeceased her many years. Her remains were interred in the Roman Catholic portion of the Albury Cemetery, where by her express wish she was laid to rest by the side of her husband. The pallbearers were P. D.Quirk (son), D. McNamara (grandson), Michael and Timothy Costigan (nephews), Peter Quirk (grandson), Denis Costigan (nephew). The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. Adams.

An old resident of the Wagga district, Mrs. Grace Quirk, aged 87 years, died on Sunday last at Cross Roads. Deceased, who was an old-age pensioner, had been in failing health for some years, but her death was accelerated by a recent severe attack of influenza. She leaves seven children, all of whom are settled in Riverina. The remains will be entrained this (Tuesday) morning's mail train, at The Rock, Messrs. McIntosh Bros, being in charge of the funeral arrangements.

OBITUARY
John Joseph Costigan
The death occurred at "Alhambra," Coonamble, at 1.45 p.m. on Thursday last, of John Joseph Costigan, aged 75 years, father of Mr. M. Costigan, manager of the mercery department of the Gilgandra branch of the Western Stores and Edgleys Ltd., and Mr. J. Costigan, accountant at the same firm's Dubbo branch. The deceased was born at Geelong, Victoria, and spent most of his life in the Riverina, having conducted hotels at Cootamundra, Temora and Young. He retired from active work about four years ago, and two years later went to reside with his brothers at "Alhambra," where death intervened. He had been in indifferent health for some time, taking bad on the Friday previous to his demise. In addition to the two sons mentioned, another, Mr. Bernie Costigan, resides at Coonamble. The daughters are Mrs. J. Punch (Chatswood), Mrs. Mclnnes (Goulburn), and Miss D. Costigan (Coonamble) . He is also survived by six brothers and three sisters, and with the exception of one, the brothers all reside at Coonamble. The sisters are Miss Costigan (Coonamble), Mrs O'Keefe (North Sydney), and Mrs. Driscoll (Yerong Creek) .
The funeral took place at Coonamble on Friday afternoon, the remains being laid to rest in the Catholic portion of the cemetery, the service at the graveside being conducted by the Rev. Father O'Farrell. To the bereaved family we extend our sympathy.

Although a Probate entry was found for Michael Costigan in manual registers 4800 / 3 in 1994, there is no record of a probate entry for him in electronic searches in 2015. The researcher T Waddingham had forwarded me a transcription of the will in March 1995.
