Notes
General:
Whilst her birth was registered as Ada, she was christened Primrose, and was always known as Primrose, she was born at Dearnley Wuerdle, in the sub district of Wuerdle and Wardle, Registration district of Rochdale, County of Lancaster. Wardle is a village within the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, in Greater Manchester, England. It lies amongst the foothills of the South Pennines, 1.8 miles (2.9 km) east-southeast of Whitworth, 2.5 miles (4 km) north-northwest of Rochdale and 12 miles (19 km) north-northeast of the city of Manchester.
Wardle is historically a part of Lancashire, The name Wardle is said to be derived from "Ward Hill", implying "fortified place". Brown Wardle Hill overlooks the village from the north, its name being derived from the Celtic word bron meaning "round".
Wardle, the most northerly settlement in Greater Manchester, encompasses small parts of Smallbridge and Dearnley urban areas contiguous with Rochdale. Lying within the historic county boundaries of Lancashire since the early 12th century, Wardle was anciently linked with Wuerdle, and lay within the township of Hundersfield and parish of Rochdale. Wuerdle and Wardle would later split from Hundersfield to form a township of itself, still within the parish of Rochdale and in the hundred of Salford.
Primrose was christened at St John the Baptist Church in Smallbridge in 1874, the same day as all her siblings other than the youngest who was not born until 1878
In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Smallbridge like this:
"SMALLBRIDGE, a village and a chapelry in Rochdale parish, Lancashire. The village stands on the river Roch, 2 miles NE of Rochdale r. station; and has a post-office under Rochdale, and numerous factories. The chapelry was constituted in 1844, and curtailed in 1867. Rated property, within the original limits, about £15,000. Pop. in 1861, of the original chapelry, 5,644; of the chapelry as curtailed in 1867, 3,554. The property is much subdivided. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Manchester. Value, £425.* Patron, the Vicar of Rochdale. The church is good; and there are chapels for Independents and Methodists, and a national school."
It appears that Primrose's parents moved to Lancashire after the 1871 Census. It has recently been found that there was another sibling Charles Henry Darlow, (not known to us until 2013) who was also born in Lancashire in 1872 and died and was buried in Lancashire in 1875. In 1878, the youngest child of William and Sarah Darlow was born in Northamptonshire so presumably they returned to Kettering between 1875 and 1878.
In the 1881 Census Primrose was living at Bridwell Lane Kettering and her occupation was scholar, with place of birth given as Burnley, Lancashire.
At the 1891 Census Primrose was living at 12 Eden Street, Kettering and her occupation was dressmaker with place of birth recorded as Rochdale Lancashire.
At the 1911 census, Primrose was the head of the house, as William was in Australia. She was living at 6 Upper Street, Kettering, and her occupation was given as shoe trade Eyeleter.
Primrose left England on 9 October 1911 on the Ship Demosthenes on a 54 day voyage to Melbourne to meet her husband. With her were her step daughter, Inez 19, and children Doris 15, Gilbert 14, Bernie 11, Vincent 9, Ethel 8, Douglas 6, and Phyllis 3.
William met the family in Melbourne. He was share farming at Allambee at the time. As there was no work at Allambee for Inez she remained in Melbourne. The remainder of the family travelled to Allambee. Some time later, William was seriously gored by a bull and was unable to return to work on the farm, so after approximately 2 years at Allambee, the family moved to Nar Nar Goon where William opened a bootmakers shop.

His address was given as at 7 Upper Street Kettering at the time of his enlistment and he was later convicted of stealing money and a watch from his brother in law at that address and was sent to prison. He was discharged from the Army and was not entitled to any medals due to larceny.
Albert Edward and Lilian Richardson apparently divorced and Lilian remarried in 1945 to Arthur Boulton.

Notes
General:
Arthur and Evylen were married according to the rites and ceremonies of the Established Church in Kettering. Witnesses to the marriage were George Edward Sargeant and Mary Plant.
Arthur travelled to the USA in 1906 with his brother George Robert. Bill (Arthur William) emigrated to Canada to find work as a bricklayer.. It would appear that Evylen remained in England and followed her husband at a later time as she is the head of the household in 1911. The family were living at 70 the Firs, Duke Street, Kettering at the time.
FROM THE RECOLLECTIONS OF ROBERT BERNARD BLACKWELL IN 1987 (NEPHEW)
........And Mum's crowd, there was her eldest brother Albert, Uncle Bill, Uncle Walt, Mum and Uncle Bob, in that order. Uncle Bill I can remember in 1909, he sold up, he had grown up boys and a couple of girls, though we never saw them, never ever visited them, I've never been in his house, I didn't even know where he lived because Mother never visited them. They were more or less at daggers drawn, she and this brother, and she never went there, and he only came to say goodbye. He brought his wife and his two boys [one son and one son in law at the time], well they were young men in their twenties. He went to America, he was a top class engineer in Kettering. They went to America [Canada] the last I heard Geoff, this is what I can't remember, whether it was Chicago or one of those places. He set up an engineering works, because they sent us a picture back, we got a picture back, not from him but from the family, and there's this building with a big board across there "William Darlow and Sons, Engineers", I don't know what they did. I don't know what happened to them, never heard of them from that day to this. That was the only clue we ever had and what became of that photograph I don't know, but it came out. ....................

Notes
General:
It appears that Charles was christened twice, once on the 8th April 1872 at Littleborough, Lancashire, England at the Holy Trinity Church. Then Charles was christened again at St John the Baptist Church, in Smallbridge, Lancashire, along with Albert Edward, Arthur William, Walter Herbert, and Primrose. William and Sarah were living at Dearnley and William's occupation was given as labourer.
When Charles was born William and Sarah were living at Box Meadow, Blatchinworth, Lancashire, England. This is noted as the sub district of Blatchinworth and Calderbrook on his birth certificate. I cannot find this town on the map so I presume it no longer exists. According to what I have been able to ascertain, it appears to have been nearby to Rochdale, and quite close to the Higher Chelburn Reservoir.
In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Blatchinworth like this: BLATCHINWORTH, a township and a subdistrict in the district of Rochdale, Lancashire. The township bears the name of Blatchinworth-with-Calderbrook; lies on the Manchester and Leeds railway, 5 miles NE of Rochdale; contains seven hamlets and Little borough village,-the last with a post office under Manchester and a r. station; and has romantic scenery., numerous good residences, a church, five dissenting chapels, an endowed school, eight cotton mills, twelve woolen mills, two collieries, and rich quarries. Real property, £14,551; of which £1,020 are in mines. Pop., 4,860. Houses, 980.-The subdistrict is conterminate with the township.
