General:
John enlisted in WW1 IN March 1915 at Flemington, Victoria where he was appointed to the 24th Battalion transport. His regimental number was 32. He embarked from Australia in May 1915 on the Euripides. He was transferred to the Imperial Camel Corps on 31 January 1916 and was stationed at the Suez Canal at Abbassial. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 24 February 1916. His war records show he was killed in action in El Ferdan, Magebra, Sinai on 6 August 1916, however, I have been unable to find this location on a map. It appears that John's body was never located and his name appears on the memorial section of the Jerusalem Cemetery.

Son of Helena Hartwell (formerly Jones), of Swan Hill, Victoria, Australia, and the late John E. Jones. Native of Mystic Park, Victoria
The Jerusalem Memorial stands in Jerusalem War Cemetery, 4.5 kilometres north of the walled city and is situated on the neck of land at the north end of the Mount of Olives, to the west of Mount Scopus. The cemetery is found on Churchill Blvd, sandwiched between Hadassah Hospital and the Hyatt Hotel. An Australian Memorial is opposite the cemetery entrance.
It would appear that John had fallen out with his mother before he left Australia but he had nominated her as his next of kin. John appears to have been living at Paika Station, Balranald, where his sister Mary Helen Davis lived. He had allotted his pay to his sister, who claimed it for some time from the Balranald Post Office, however, his mother wrote to the war office in July 1915 and requested that the money be allocated to her as she was a struggling widow. In that letter she advised that her son had been to Swan Hill in April and had seen her at a fete but had ignored her. After John's death many letters went to the War Office from Mary Helen Davis and Helen Jones - Hartwell both claiming they were next of kin and claiming John's money and goods. It would seem that John's mother ended up with his possessions and his medals despite his sisters requests.

Leonard's occupations were PMG linesman, baker and farmer. He suffered many years of ill health and retired in the 1970's.
The family moved around quite a bit, Red Cliffs, Melbourne, Swan Hill / Woorineen, Myrtleford & Bright, Korumburra, Bena, and back to Korumburra.
He was referred to as Pop by all his grandchildren.

FAMOUS BAKER
A Bena Football and Netball Club volunteer and famous Korumburra baker has died.
Leonard George Jones (Pop or Poppy, as he is known to many) was born on December 13 1925 at Bendigo, the second of three children to George and Kath Jones.
Len started school at Red Cliffs primary, then St. Joseph's Catholic school in Red Cliffs until the family moved to Swan Hill.
In his youth, Len was a cub Scout, a roller skater, motorbike and sidecar racer as well as playing harmonica for a regional radio station.
He was even a ballroom dance instructor at a prestigious Melbourne dance academy.
Len left school around the age of 14 and took up an apprenticeship as a baker in Swan Hill.
He continued his apprenticeship in Nhill before finishing up at Kew.
During his apprenticeship year, World War 2 broke out Len enlisted in the Navy.
Len was not taken in, however, as his baker's apprenticeship didn't allow for such under the terms of the Essential Services Act, so he had to stay home and bake bread.
Employment opportunities after the war led Len to Yenda (NSW) where he started his own business as a baker.
He gave this away and followed his father's footsteps, joining the PMG where he worked as a linesman, cable joiner, and jackhammer operator.
It was around this time he met Margaret Sullivan.
Len and Margaret had nine children, Michael, Kathleen, Patricia, Gregory, Susan, Maxwell, David, Fiona and Kellie; then 21 grandchildren, a number which is still increasing.
Len gave away his PMG job in the late 1950's and joined his brother-in-law working on a fruit block at Woorineen, near Swan Hill.
When the block was sold returned his hand back to baking and the family moved to Myrtleford before moving to Korumburra 43 years ago.
Len soon earned fame as the baker at LeGross's in Korumburra, along with his home delivered bread run.
Len left the bakehouse and took up farmhand work, milking cows in the district for Walkers (Korumburra), Castles (Bena), Prossers (Loch), and Lupis (Bass Valley) before being forced onto an invalid pension 24 years ago.
At this juncture (1980) the family settled at Korumburra into what at the time was a rather plain housing commission house.
Len's love of gardening saw him transform the appearance with a very well groomed garden.
But it was not only the front garden that was Len's showpiece, he toiled equally hard in the backyard with his veggie patch, fruit trees and orchids.
As his children grew, Len's interest in life followed them.
For many years he helped coach at the Bena Netball Club and was a team manager thirds and fourths teams for the Bena Football Club.
Len also served on the Bena Football Club Committee.
He was also involved in the cricket club at Bena, playing key roles in coaching and team management.
Yet despite all these involvements in things for the kids, Len still managed a bit of time for fishing, cards, a bet or two on the horses, and time to watch the cricket and footy on TV.
After an illness, Len passed away peacefully at Korumburra hospital on April 9, aged 77 years.

Junee Bride Married on Mother's Wedding Anniversary
When the marriage of ex-W.A.A.F. Joyce Margaret Coxon and Mr. Terence Martin Turner took place at St. Joseph's Church, Junee, ex-service friends mainly comprised the congregation. The bride chose her mothers wedding anniversary for her own wedding day.

BONHAM-In affectionate memory of our dear mother Mary Agnes Bonham, who departed this life 25th November 1899 RIP.
After Mary Agnes died, a thorough inventory and valuation was made of her estate including land, houses, goods and chattels. She was left quite well off by her husband but by the time of her death, the estate had dwindled to approximately Ł1,600.
Those entitled to the distribution of the estate were Mary Agnes Cecilia Bonham, James John Bonham, Annie Isabella Bonham Hehir, Margaret Angela Bonham, Edward Joseph Bonham, Teresa Ignatius Bonham, John Stanislaus Bonham and Francis Philip Bonham.
The Solicitors that handled the Probate were Gavan, Duffy and King of Melbourne.

I have obtained a birth/ baptism certificate held at St James, Melbourne for the 1855 birth of Mary Ann Jones to John and Mary Jones, John's occupation is given as Mason, but there is no further information on the birth certificate to confirm this is the correct Mary, other than location and parents names.
It is uncertain if this Mary Jones is the correct Mary referred to on the death certificate of John Jones. John's son Elijah John was the informant of the death of his father so it is assumed that the information is correct but it is not confirmed that this is the correct Mary. Further investigation will be necessary to ascertain this.

FRIDAY 11th MAY
(Before the Police Magistrate:)
Frederick George Castle was brought up on remand charged with having improper intercourse with Mary Ellen Jones, a girl under the age of 14 years. Mr. A. J. Robertson appeared for the prosecution.
Senior constable Loomes stated that from information received he proceeded to Yanga Lake and arrested accused on the charge above mentioned. The offence took place on or about the 14th inst. when the girl was 13 years and 11 months of age. He cautioned accused regarding any statement he might make In reply to the charge accused said "I am not going to tell any lies about it, I am guilty, but she is as bad as I am. She came messing about me when I was at my work."
The girl, Mary Ellen Jones, and her father and mother gave evidence which was unfit for publication. Dr. Kelly deposed to having examined the girl and in his opinion she had been enciente for about 4 months .She was well developed for 14 years of age, and he should have thought she was older.
Accused made it statement to the effect that he was sorry for what he had done. He was aware that he had ruined the girl, and he was quite willing to marry her if that would do any good.
Accused was committed to take his trial at the Deniliquin Quarter Sessions to be holden on the 21st of June next.
Frederick George Castle was convicted and sentenced to 18 months imprisonment at Darlinghurst Prison for carnally knowing a female between the age of 10 and 14 years. His mother was a Mrs Wilson who was living at Brookong Station via the Rock according to New South Wales, Australia, Gaol Description and Entrance Books, 1818-1930 for Frederick George Castle Entrance and Description Book Darlinghurst 1900.
Frederick was born in Victoria in 1876 and died at Deniliquin in 1944. He married Eliza Jones in Redfern NSW in 1907. He and Eliza had 3 children.
Named as Mary Helen on her mother's death certificate. From her deceased brothers war records I have ascertained the Mary Helen married ? Davis and was living at Paika Station, Homebush Hotel, Balranald in February 1917.
