OBITUARY.
THE LATE MR. GEORGE STEPHEN MORRIS
By the death of the late Mr. George Stephen Morris, which occurred at Fremantle on the 12th inst, there has been removed from our midst one of the best known and most highly respected residents of Cottesloe. The deceased gentleman was born at Egremont, England, and came to Sydney, New South Wales, with his parents at ten years of age. When 22 years of age he came to this State, and shortly afterwards was appointed secretary of the Peppermint Grove Road Board, which had just been instituted. He held that position up to the time of his death, a period of nearly 20 years.
He was also, health inspector for the Cottesloe Municipal Council, and assistant District Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages for the Cottesloe district The Cottesloe BowlIng Club claims him as one of their founders, and first secretary, and at the time of his death, he held the office of treasurer. He was a prominent bowler, and held many trophies won on the green. Mr. Morris was the first secretary and a foundation member of the Cottesloe Choral Society, and was also chairman at one time. He was a prominent worker of the Cottesloe Presbyterian Church, being an elder and a foundation member of that body. Since the outbreak of war, he had always been in the fore in Red Cross work - In fact, there has hardly been any work in aid of charity In the district that he had not been interested in. He was very popular with all classes an account of his kindly and obliging disposition.
A widow and a young family, of three sons and four daughters survive him.
The funeral cortege moved from his late residence, Johnston-street, Cottesloe, on Wednesday afternoon, and proceeded to the Karrakatta Cemetery, where the remains were interred in the Presbyterian portion. The Rev. Bluey Steele, who conducted a service at the house, also officiated at the graveside, in the presence of a very large and representative gathering. The chief mourners were:- Mrs. Morris (wife), Private Bevil, and Masters Bernard and John Morris (sons), the Misses Adelaide, Constance, and Josephine Morris (daughters), Mrs. P. Dore (mother-in-law), Mr. P. Dore (father-in-law), Messrs. Horace J. G. Edwards, W. J. Smith, and Harold Dore (brothers-in-law), Mesdames W. J. Smith, H. Dore, and W. Edwards (sisters in law). The Misses Margaretta and Violet Smith, Margaretta, Queenie, and Sylvia Edwards (nieces), Messrs. Glanville, and Reginald Edwards (nephews), Mesdames T. Brown, jun., A. Brown, and Messrs. A. Brown and C. Haynea (cousins). The pall-bearers were: - Messrs. F. A, Moseley, session clerk; H. M. Oliphant board of management, E. K. Byrne, chairman, Endeavor Society, Dr. S. Macaulay, and Mr. E. A. Black (Elders, all of the Cottesloe . Presbyterian Church), E. A. Sagar (acting chairman), C. Walker, ; and J. M. Hill (of the Peppermint Grove Roads Board), H. M'Cormick (Medical and Health Department, and Health Inspectors' Association), Blake (town clerk, Cottesloe Municipal Council), C G. Piper (president Cottesloe Bowling Club), J. Palmer (conductor Cottesloe District Choral -Society), and A. Smith.
Amongst those present .were: -
Messrs. a C. Parker . (representing Cottesloe District United Friendly Societies' Association, and J. Eastwood, Ltd.), J. McEwan (secretary), F. Mann (acting chairman), (members of the Cottesloe Beach Road Board), and numerous others. Wreaths were placed on the grave by the Cottesloe Bowling Club, Cottesloe District Choral Society, Cottesloe Presbyterian Church Council, No. 9 N.C.O.'s School, Claremont and many others. Numerous letters, telegrams, and cards, etc., of condolence have been received from various bodies and friends.- The funeral arrangements were In the hands of Messrs. Arthur E. Davies and' Co., of Fremantle and Claremont
