Crocker - Humphreys. - A quiet but pretty wedding took place at "Mena, ' Beaufort. the residence of Mr and Mrs H. Cuthbertson (brother-in-law and sister of the bride) on 20th October, when Miss Elizabeth Breeze Humphreys, of Beaufort (third daughter of the late Mr and Mrs J. B. Humphreys) was married to Mr Oliver Josiah Crocker, of Mildura (second son of 'Mr James Crocker and the late Mrs Crocker, of Raglan). The Rev. E. H. Coltman, of the Beaufort Methodist Church, was the officiating minister.
The ceremony took place in the drawing-room which was tastefully decorated with lilies and strings of small wedding bells the latter being suspended from the ceiling. The bride, who was given away by her brother in-law (Mr H. Cuthbertson), was becomingly attired in a navy twill costume, with hat of navy crepe de chine, trimmed with gold tissue. She carried a handsome bouquet of white roses and fern. The bridesmaids were the Misses Verna Cuthbertson and Nellie Patterson (two little nieces of the bride), who wore dainty dresses of white, voile (hand-embroidered), carried bouquets of pink roses, and wore gold bangles (the gifts of the bridegroom). Mrs Coltman played "The wedding march" at the conclusion of the ceremony, and Geoff. Cuthbertson (nephew of the bride) hung a lucky horseshoe on the bride's arm as the newly-married couple were leaving the drawing-room. A number of relatives of the happy couple were the (guests of Mrs Cuthbertson at a sumptuous wedding breakfast. The Rev. E. H. Coltman presided at the festive board, and the customary toasts were cordially honored. The bride was the recipient of many valuable and useful presents (including a number of cheques). Mr and Mrs Crocker subsequently motored to Ballarat, and from that city travelled to Wangaratta, where the honeymoon was spent. Their future home will be at Mildura.

'Walsh St link to shootings by police'
MELBOURNE: The Walsh Street killing of two young constables in 1988 may have triggered the high number of fatal shootings by police in recent years, Victoria Police chief commissioner Neil Comrie said yesterday. "I suppose there may be some aspects associated with the Walsh Street murders and the Russell Street bombing.." he said. "There's no doubt there's been over many years a very violent criminal underworld in Victoria." Mr Comrie was speaking to Channel Nine about the disproportionately high number of fatal police shootings in Victoria.
Stephen Raymond Crome, 18, and Paul Ronald Skews, 35, were shot outside a real estate office on Monday in suburban Hampton Park after police were tipped off about an attempted robbery.
Their deaths brought to 18 the number of people killed by police in Victoria since 1988, compared with four in NSW in the same period.

Coroner criticises police
MELBOURNE: There was a real risk that innocent bystanders may have been hurt when police ambushed and killed two men attempting an armed robbery in Melbourne in May last year, a coroner found yesterday. But Coroner Graeme Johnston said police were justified in fatally shooting career criminal Paul Ronald Skews, 35, and his accomplice Stephen Raymond Crome, 18. The shooting happened as they were about to rob Winning's Real Estate Agency in Somerville Road, Hampton Park, in Melbourne's south-east. Mr Johnstone said police did not take adequate action to protect members of the public who were in the area, apart from the real estate agency's staff. "The shooting by members of the Special Operations Group was lawful and justified in that all members fired after being put in reasonable fear that their own lives were at risk," Mr Johnston said. "But in the context of an operation with some of its management objectives specified as being 'safety of members of the public, police and the offenders', it was not a success."

DEATH OF JAMES CROUGEY
CORONER'S INQUEST
VERDICT OF SUICIDE
The circumstances attending the death of James Crougey at Ballarat East on Wednesday were yesterday enquired into by Mr. J. Fraser, J.P., at the Hospital.
Sergt Priest conducted the proceedings on behalf of the police.
Mrs Crougey, widow of deceased, deposed that shortly after 7 a.m. on Wednesday her husband got up, dressed and left the room. Later she called him to his breakfast, and receiving no reply went to an outhouse, and there saw her husband lying on the floor bleeding from a large wound in the throat. He was unconscious and gasping. On the arrival of Dr. Salter deceased was removed to the hospital.
He was a great sufferer from a painful complaint, but she never heard him express an intention of taking his life. She found the razor (produced) near her husband back when he was first discovered. Deceased suffered a great deal during Tuesday night.
James Edmund Crougey, draper's assistant, deposed that shortly before 7 a.m. on Wednesday he was awakened by his father coming into the room with a lighted candle and taking something from a chest of drawers. It was deceased's custom to wake witness, but he did not do so in his usual way. Witness then got up and some time later when he was about to leave for work he heard his mother scream. Witness then went to an outhouse, where he saw his father lying in a pool of blood. The razor (produced) was witness' property, and he left it on a chest of drawers in his (witness's) bed room. He had never heard his father threaten to take his own life. He knew his father was suffering from an irritating complaint.
John Martin, blacksmith, stated that shortly before 8 a.m. on Wednesday from what he heart he rang up a doctor and went across to deceased's back yard and saw deceased in the position previously described. Seeing it was a bad cut witness and his son carried deceased into house. He had known deceased for years, and on several occasions he had heard him complain of ill-health, but deceased was the last man he would expect to take his own life.
Dr Sandison gave evidence that deceased arrived at the Hospital in a dying condition. There was a deep gash extending across the neck from one side to the other. Everything was done to try to restore his condition, but he succumbed an hour later. Death was due to loss of blood from injuries that in his opinion had been self-inflicted.
Const. Jones of Victoria street, gave formal evidence.
Mr Fraser recorded a verdict of death from loss of blood caused by a wound in the throat, self inflicted. Mr Fraser added it was a very sad case, and he deeply sympathised with Mrs Crougey and family. No doubt deceased suffered very much from his complaint and insomnia. They all knew deceased was a most respectable man, one of the best men in Ballarat East. He (Mr Fraser) knew him well as a fine citizen and a good man.
