"THE AULD HOOSE"
"THE AULD HOOSE"
A recent visitor to the district interested in the pioneer, home ,of the Herbert-Limmer family (still occupied by Mrs. Limmer sen.) con tributes the following:-
The cottage was a thatched one,
Tho' not the one we mean,
'Tis on the 'banks of 'Arthur's Creek
This famous one is seen..
Full four score' years and more ago
This humble home, was reader,
In days when land '.was very rough
And scarce a bit was cleared.
'Twas made of slabs and palings
Cut from .the trees around,
And placed in good position
In level central ground;
The 'pioneers grew cereals
And feed for horse and cow,
In" days when markets, roads and towns
Were not the same as now.
And this old house was modern,
Its shingled gables 'high,
Not roofed as now with iron
Which glist'ning meets the eye;
In those days bullock waggons
.The produce carted out,
And sparsely scattered farmlets
Were coming round about.
'Twas there that' Grandma Limmer
First saw the light they say,
And full of years this honest soul
Is dwelling there to-day;
Camp ovens were the latest stoves
And wood was easy got;
The trees they felled helped clear the land
Made fertile every lot.
The pioneers were hardy,
Brave women and brave men,
To-day we pay our tribute
To those who toiled so then;
And in this verse acknowledge true,
The homage that we owe
To those who made our history,
And successes that we know.
The while we gaze. upon the site,
Where this old house still stands,
Remembering its builders
We'd .respond to Life's demands;
May 'we, and those who've yet to live'
And learn of lessons past,
Like these great pioneers, build well
The things- that long shall last.
Facilities that we enjoy,
And e'en 'the district's name,
These early settlers bravely made
And earned awarded fame. 'May this old house inspire us
Example good to take,
That of our lives,because of-theirs,
Best future we may make.
