LOCAL & GENERAL
Although the funeral of the late Mr John McGuinness was private on Thursday last, a large number of his friends attended to show their respect for the deceased and his sorrowing family. The remains were interred in the Chewton Cemetery alongside those of his young son. The Rev. Father Keon conducted the service at the grave and Jas. Kinross carried out the mortuary arrangements. Deceased was almost the last of the old sporting enthusiasts of Newstead's early days. He was married about 31 years ago, and prior to that he resided with his parents, brother and sister, at Sandy Creek. The latter is now the sole survivor of the family. They arrived in Victoria when the deceased was only 9 years of age and at Sandy Creek he was associated with Mr. Jas. McMillan in a grey race horse, Duke of Majenta, which they owned and raced with varying success for many years. The horse was notorious for running off the course when nearing the finish. McMillan used to ride him in winkers, and had the utmost difficulty in heading for the winning post. On the Maldon course, even when leading and with only about a dozen yards to go, he would often dart suddenly for the booth and there stop. After coming to Newstead Mr. McGuinness possessed the stallion Wantage, which he raced and which sired the pony stallion of that name later owned by Mr. McKay; also Tomtit which was the property of the late Mr. M. Sullivan; Nina, Tommy, and several others which were raced by Mr. McGuinness. Tommy, and several others which were raced by Mr. McGuinness. Tommy was a good trotter and was well known in his time on a good many courses. During the greater portion of his residence here Mr. McGuinness was associated with the race club as an office bearer and a trustee of the course. The first Trustees were Messrs J.C.House, J.Tracey [Treacey], J.Kyd, J. Sheehan, and Nomens. On Mr. Treacey's death, Mr. McGuinness was elected, and was instrumental in getting the course proclaimed a recreation reserve. He was also a member of the local Shire Council for many years, and several times occupied the Presidential chair. He was a good supporter of the mining industry and was a shareholder and director in the Byron Reef and other mines in that locality. He erected a weighbridge near his hotel and also saleyards. Both are a great convenience to farmers and incidentally of benefit to the hotel. He passed away quietly and peacefully into the great beyond.

NEWSTEAD.
Mr. John McGuinness died here yesterday afternoon. Deceased had been ailing for some months past, but his death was not expected to take place so suddenly. He was an active member of the local racing club, and held the position of official timekeeper for many years, and also acted in a similar capacity some few years ago for the Maryborough Racing Club. He
had been a prominent member of the local Shire Council, and represented the South Riding for several years.
Deceased was widely known, and on many occasions took an active interest in matters when claims for charity or other local requirements were organised.

This is the day so sad to recall,
This is the day of remembrance to all;
Two years have passed, our hearts still sore,
As time goes on we miss him more.

McIntosh, who departed this life on February 11, 1913, at Chiltern Valley, (No. 2).
The one I loved is now laid low,
His fond, true heart is still;
The hands that always helped me so
Now he in death's cold chill.
Sadly missed.

THE CRIMINAL COURT.
COMMON ASSAULT
Alexander Claude McIntosh, a youth, appeared to answer a charge of common assault of a girl named Lucy May Turnbull.
He pleaded guilty.
Mr N K Ewing asked that the First Offenders Act should be applied to the accused's case considering all the circumstances. McIntosh was below the ordinary mental standard and the fault was really not altogether his. He had
rendered himself criminally liable, but as the depositions would show again all the people in his district had signed a
document attesting to his previous good character. There was one resident who had guaranteed to give him work, and
keep a strict watch over him.
His Honor said that he would carefully weigh all the facts, and reserved his judgement.

MAN FINED ON THREE CHARGES.
ALBURY, Tuesday.
Fines totalling £12 were imposed on Alexander Claude McIntosh, 24, who had pleaded guilty at the Albury Police Court to-day to charges of having resisted arrest, offensive behaviour and having maliciously damaged a glass door at the Carlton Hotel.
