DECREE NISI GRANTED.
Frederick Hendy petitioned for a divorce from his wife North Hendy, on the grounds of desertion.
Mr M. Lazarus appeared for the petitioner. The respondent was not represented.
Frederick Hendy returned soldier, living in Talbot street; Ballarat east, said, he married the respondent, at Kalgoorlie (W .A.),on the 2nd July, 1906. They lived in the West until he went to the war, and when in England he saw in a newspaper cutting his wife's name in connection with, some divorce proceedings. On his return to Australia he came to his mother's house in Ballarat and wrote to his wife, who was still in Kalgoorlie and invited her to come over and see if they could come to some arrangement. He received a reply from his wife saying she would not go to his people's. place as they might go against her but if he would send her £25 she would come across and if they did not come to any arrangement it would be a holiday for her. He next wrote and told her he was going to Adelaide where he would meet her, and would pay her fare if they could not come to an arrangement and he had not heard from her since. A decree nisi was grant.

Woman Suicides in Flat
A finding that Nora Hendy caused her own death by gas poisoning on October 17, was returned by the Coroner (Mr. T. Y. A. Lang, P.M.) today. Mrs. Hendy was found dead in her Hay-street flat with her head on a gas stove, and the jet turned on. Medical evidence showed that, death had been caused by gas poisoning. A sister of Mrs. Hendy said that deceased, who was a barmaid, had been subject to despondency through having been unemployed for some time.
SHOCK FOR NEIGHBOR
Mrs. Elizabeth Roe, occupant of a flat adjoining Mrs. Hehdy's, said that on October 14 Mrs. Hendy received news
concerning a friend which upset her greatly. For several days Mrs. Hendy who said that if she had a revolver she would kill herself, was not left alone. On the morning of October 17, when witness knocked at Mrs. Hendy's door, she noticed a strong smell of gas. With her husband and another man witness went into the flat arid saw Mrs. Hendy, clad in pyjamas, sitting with her head on the gas stove, and a rug over her head and shoulders. The gas jet was turned on. Mrs. Hendy was dead.

in May 2017 I was contacted by a Gord Cruickshank from Canada saying that he wondered if his James and this James both born abt 1799 were one in the same as their family had information that at least one sibling came to Australia. On checking Michael Jones and Gord Cruikshank's DNA, there is a definite match between the 2, estimated at 5.1 cousins and 12.6 cM's over 1 segment. If this relationship proves to be correct, this information has been extracted from Gord.c's Rootsweb tree.

Hi again, Coral.
I believe we can safely confirm this as a [DNA] match.
I just spoke to a third cousin who has done no research but inherited information from his Aunt Effie (a granddaughter of James' brother Alexander).
These notes state that one of Alexander's brothers, possibly Lewis or his twin, went to Australia.
I know Lewis settled in Ontario, Canada and that his twin Charles reportedly died in 1814.
However, James was also a twin to Janet who died in 1816

The Cruickshank Descendants
As time goes on it is hoped that the stories of our various ancestors and their descendants will be documented and added to this site. All related individuals or friends are asked to help. Forward any documents, information, pictures, or stories you may have - don't forget yourself, your spouse, your parents, or your children. Send to historian@cruikshank.ca
From Gord Cruikshank's website which has not been updated for some time but interesting regardless.

In 1790 George Cruickshank (1765-1842) married Jean/Jane Stewart (1776- 1854) in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The couple lived in Gordonsburn (Longhill) where they had fifteen (known) children including two or more sets of twins. At least two of their children emigrated to Canada.
Their youngest, Alexander (1810-1869), appears to have been the first to arrive in Upper Canada - somewhere between 1835 and 1839. He eventually settled in Lower Canada near what is now Brennan's Hill, near Low, in Gatineau, Quebec. He married Elizabeth McKinzie in Scotland in two separate ceremonies. The first was in December 1833 in her home parish of Drainie, Moray, Scotland. The second was in January 1834 in his parents home parish of Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Family history states that Elizabeth was a cousin of "the rebel" William Lyon MacKenzie who was the leader of the Upper Canada Rebellion in the late 1830's. We know from census records that Alex and Betsy had children born in Upper Canada around 1839 to 1841. There is some speculation that it was the connection to the rebel that resulted in the decision to move to Lower Canada. In the 1851 census he appears as a pioneer blacksmith with 400 acres. Most of Alexander's descendants dropped the middle 'C' in the name and spell it Cruikshank.
Alexander's nephew, James, appears to be the second to arrive, around 1850. James was the first descendant to marry in Canada - he married Anne Wallace at St James Cathedral in St. Andrews, Ontario in November 1852. James founded the Cruickshank Carriage Works in Weston, reportedly had an undertakers establishment, was the first Justice of the Peace for Weston, and was also the town's first librarian.
James' father, Lewis/Louis Cruickshank (1797 - 18…) followed his son in 1855 with several more of his children. While some of his children remained in Scotland others brought spouses and families to Canada.
Another of Lewis' sons, George eventually moved to Heathcote, Ontario near Georgian Bay. Like his brother James, he founded a carriage works and also operated as an undertaker. He was secretary to the school board and was also the Postmaster for the area.
The descendants of these individuals have varied stories. Some became doctors, some teachers, some were priests. One is even reported to have stolen a car from the front of Union Station in Ottawa. Turns out it belonged to C.D. Howe , a prominent Canadian politician in the cabinet of PM William Lyon MacKenzie King - who was the grandson of "the rebel ". 3102,3103
