Notes
General:
Edward Holland and Maria Smith were married at Bow Brickhill. They were said to be Sojourners, this term is used to refer to Gypsies or Romany Travellers. At the 1861 Census, Edward appears to be living in Kineton, Warwickshire with a woman named Mary Ann Holland, 30 years younger than himself who is said to be his wife, however, he did not marry Mary Ann Smart until 1864.

Edward aged 52 Widower, married by Banns, Mary Ann Smart, aged 26, Spinster on 25 December 1864 at Irchester, by Banns. Edwards occupation is given as brickmaker, his father as Richard Holland Brickmaker. Mary Anne's father is given as James Smart Labourer. They were married by John Smith, Curate and witnesses to the wedding were John Holland and Sarah Holland. Edward, Mary Ann and Sarah all signed with their mark.

When Sue Holmes (England) was 16 years of age her grandfather Walter Herbert William Darlow told her that "there were gypsie Smiths in the family, they were fairground people."

Notes
General:
Jane was born before her parents marriage. Her birth may be registered as Jane Smith but to date I haven't found a birth registration.

Jane married Arthur Orton and had several children. By the 1861 Census Jane is a widow and Jane and a child named Charles were living in the Wellingborough Union Workhouse, England but no other children are living with them at the time. Does this mean that all children other than Arthur Charles had previously passed away?

She then had children with Reuben Silburn, but to date I have found no marriage registration to Reuben Silburn. DNA does however confirm that Jane's Silburn children were biologically hers as matches to other Holland descendants show a clear match with the descendants of the Silburn children.

Northamptonshire Mercury 6 Nov 1875 page 5
Neglecting to maintain

Reuben Silburn, shoemaker, 7 Lower Harding Street, was charged with desertion of his wife and 4 children thus leaving them chargeable to Northampton Union, in September last. Mr Tomalin appeared for the Board. He stated that about 5 months ago the prisoner went away, but the wife and children were not relieved until the date of the information. About three weeks ago the wife was confined and Mr Franklin, the relieving officer, had given her a doctors ticket which reprsented 6s 10d a week. This relief has been granted 3 weeks. This week however, the woman was not expected to live and a nurse had been granted, which would cost an additional 3s. Mr Alderman, in the absence of Mr Franklin proved the case - three months hard labour.

This is probable marriage, but needs further checking. If this is the correct husband there are 4 children William C Patrick b. 1879, Arthur Patrick 1879, Kate Patrick 1884 and Bert L Patrick 1892-1973.

Another possible marriage was to Arthur Ives and children are Arthur J Ives, 1878, Emma Priscilla b. 1880 and married Edward Orton, Jessie b. 1883, Annie E Ives 1885, Mark Ives 1888, Rose Ives 1889, George Ives, 1894-1964, Flora Ives 1895, Florence M Ives 1895 and Kate Ives 1899.

There is a death of a Mary Ann Patrick in Wellingborough, in 1925 and also a death of Mary A Ives in Camberwell, London in 1925.

                4. John HOLLAND [14182] (1821-1898)

Notes
General:
His 1859 death shows Richard was living at Southcourt (possibly Southcourt Road), Linslade at the time of his death. His occupation is recorded as rush matmaker and the death was registered by Elizabeth Carter who was present at the death.

On his son Edwards marriage certificate, Richard is recorded as a Brick maker.

Some Ancestry and other family trees have Richard marrying Elizabeth Langley in 1810 and having a large number of children, but as Richard and Virgin married in 1809 and were still together at Virgin's death in 1841 and had children until at least 1818, I am not sure of the accuracy of the marriage to Elizabeth Langley.

The 1841 census shows the following living at Church end Totternhoe
Richard Holland 55 Ag Lab
Elizabeth 45
Sarah 20 Straw plaiter
Eliza 15 Straw plaiter
Hannah 15 straw plaiter
Emma 13 straw plaiter
Solomon 15 Ag lab
Samuel 8 Ag Lab
Harriot 6
Thomas 4
Pheby 1

It is not known from this census if these are children, in laws or grandchildren as the 1841 census does not give this detail.

by 1851, this Richard 72 Ag lab b. Totternhoe (1779) and Betsey 67 (1784) Straw dealer b. Dunstable, Bedfordshire, were living at Lower End Totternhoe. They were living alone at that time. Is this the correct Richard or is it the Richard who married Virgin Smith. This is not possible to say from the information currently available. 12/10/2023

                7. George Robert DARLOW [1536] (1878-1944)

Notes
General:
Sarah was 19 years old at the time of her first marriage which took place at the Parish Church, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. Her profession at her first marriage was given as housekeeper, and her address was Railway Station.

When she married for the 2nd time her occupation was given as Closer and her address was given as White Horse yard. In the 1861 Census, there is a Thomas and Martha Horn living next door to William Darlow and Sarah. Possibly Sarah's brother and sister in law from her first marriage. Also Sarah's brother Thomas aged 14 was living with William and Sarah in 1861.

Sarah's mother, Maria Smith, is said to have been a gypsy (sjholmes51-Ancestry.com). Robert Bernard Blackwell used to tell the family a story about someone in the Darlow family being a gypsy (Romany Traveller). He said that the women in the family used to sit around the fire smoking pipes and that the family used to talk in a different language. Dave Darlow, England, in July 2012 advises that they were told that Sarah Holland was a gypsy and his father could speak the gypsy language as could his grandfather and they learnt it from Sarah Darlow (Holland).

In 1872 when Charles Henry was born, Sarah and William were living at Box Meadow, Blatchinworth, Lancashire and William's occupation was given as brickmakers labourer. In April 1875 when Charles Henry died, William and Sarah were living at New Road, Dearnley Wuerdle, Lancashire. Interestingly, Sarah's surname is given as Late Horn, formerly Johnson on Charles Henry's birth certificate.

In 1911, Thomas's wife Sarah and Florence and Alice were listed in the Northampton Work house, Wellingborough. Sarah is said to be married however I can find no trace of Thomas Snr or Thomas Jnr at this census. The census also states that there are 8 living children and none deceased. So there are 3 children missing from this list. I have found a Beatrice Holland 4 and a John Holland 1 (page 51 of 191) residents of the work house at this time, so I suspect they may be 2 more of the children

Serious Allegations Against Parents

Mr William Tamalin, the Deputy Coroner, conducted an inquest at the Swan Inn, Earl's Barton, on Friday afternoon, concerning the death of a child named John Henry Holland, aged twenty months, the son of Thomas Henry Holland, who died on wednesday morning. As the doctor was unable to certify the cause of death and allegations of neglect were made against the parents, the Coroner was communicated with, - The first witness was the father, Thomas Henry Holland, a shoe finisher of Earl's Barton, who said the child was a year and eight months old. He had three children alive, one aged six years and the other two twins three years. He had been at Earl's Barton fourteen months, but had been short of work at times, earned as little as 3s., and his best week only totalled 14s. Subsequently he confessed, in reply to the Foreman, that he thought he got as much as £1 one week. - Inspetor Ward, of the Children's Society, deposed to visiting the house and finding the child in a dirty state, lying on the brick floor with it's face on the bricks. The house was filthy and devoid of food. The child weighed 14lbs, with it's clothes on, and 13lbs without. It should have weighed 23lbs. - P.C. Burrows corroborated. - Dr Hyde said the cause of death was a disease of the lungs. Clean surroundings and careful treatment might have prolonged its life. - The jury returned a verdict of "Death from natural causes" and cautioned the father as to the uncleanliness of the house. They thought there was suficient work in the village if the man liked to look for it. They also considered that great indebtedness was due to the society for the way they had looked into the case, and also to the Inspector.
