South Australian Register (Adelaide, SA : 1839 - 1900) Fri 13 Dec 1895 Page 6 WENTWORTH (N.S.W.), DECEMBER 8.
On Saturday the youngest son of our Post master, Mr. Davis, was drowned. He was a bright, manly little fellow of about nine. While with a companion about his own age fishing in the Murray he was tempted by seeing some others bathing to go in. The spot being a long sloping sandspit, there appeared no danger, but there are holes in the bank, and little Fred and his mate both got into one of these. Johnson, the other boy, was saved by a boy named A. Fall, whilst Mr. A. Woodhead, of the Federal Standard, went after the deceased, but though he got hold of him, he was too exhausted to save him. The body was recovered yesterday and buried in the evening. The deepest sympathy is felt for Mr. and Mrs. Davis.

coincidentally I also found this, a different Fred Davis but also drowned very close to the same time.

Notable Enlistment. - There enlisted at the Town Hall, Echuca, yesterday afternoon George Washington Davies, 44 years of ago laborer, McKindlay street, Echuca East. Mr. Davies has already two sons at the front, and has determined to get there himself as well. He has been successful thus far, and yesterday has passed the preliminary medical test at Echuca.

George was discharged as medically unfit due to "premature dementia". When questioned he said he was 57 years old and he was actually 44 years old. The doctor remarks that he "looks 57" and has aterio sclerosis.

Richard survived the "Earl of Charlemont" Shipwreck at Barwon Heads in 1853, but was later tragicially drowned.

I have found some newspaper reports from May 1867 about a Richard Davies (sometimes Davis) who was a correspondent to the Geelong newspapers and a rate collector who lived at Winchelsea, who lost his way and drowned near Inverleigh.

An inquest was held yesterday at the Inverleigh, Hotel, Inverleigh, on the body of Richard Davies, who was drowned in a water hole forming part of Warrambin Creek, on Friday last. The evidence disclosed that the deceased had been out collecting rates, and that he must.have, while on his return, lost his way and rode into the waterhole, and the jury returned a verdict of death by drowning.

Another member of the Press has left the scene of his earthly labors. Mr Richard Davis, of Winchelsea, for many years a correspondent of the Geelong papers, wrote his last communication on the 23rd May, beginning it with the words, ' In the midst of life we are in death,' and before the close of the day he was accidentally drowned. His writings were of the most genial nature, and displayed considerable ability. He was much respected in the districts of Winchelsea and Inverleigh.

THE DAVIES Fund.-In recognition of the valuable services rendered, by the late Richard Davies to the interest of the whole neighbourhood, the Odd Fellows of Winchelsea have taken a step in the right direction to place the family in a comfortable position. Messrs George Anderson, William Stirling, Henry Collins W. McWilliam, M. E. Ball, G. Gullan and G. Lee, have been, appointed a committee of management. They have already opened up subscription lists, . and are. sending them right and left throughout the entire district. We have no doubt but that the appeal will be readily responded to, and that a goodly sum will thus be collected. Mr Davies was. always the first to render assistance both: by giving his time and his means to any who had fallen into adversity; and now that he himself had been suddenly taken away and at an age, when he might have, fairly calculated upon living many years to be the support and stay of his wife and children, leaving them unprovided for, it will be deemed a.duty, by all who knew him, to aid his widow and orphans.

THE DAVIES Fund.-The subscription lists issued for the benefit of the widow and orphans of the late Mr Richard Davies are, we are pleased to say, being rapidly filled up. Mr Davies was very widely and most favorably known; those who had not the pleasure of knowing him personally knew him by his intelligent writings, and hence the success attending the subscription.
We might just say to those who have not already subscribed, that all lists will be returned to the treasurer by the 1st of July.

MEETING OF SINGERS
MORVA DAVIES AND MELBA.
Writing to the Melbourne "Herald" from 'London, Miss Freda Sternberg says :--Amongst the MeIba visitors this day was Miss Morva Davies, the young daughter of Mr and Mrs C. G. Davies, of Horsham, who won the South Street championship before she came over to London to study voice production with Miss Anne Williams.

She had come to Hatfield, Madame Melba's country home, with Miss Williams as Melba had agreed to hear: her sing, and give her. opinion as to the possibilities of her voice and her future.
"Have you any money?" was the first question Dame Nelie put to the young singer.
"Thank goodness," she remarked when the reply came "Yes." Then she went on to expound once more on the folly of young singers coming over to this, side of the world without the necessary financial backing, and genenerally pointing out the difficulties that lay in the path of the ambitious beginner.

After she had heard Miss Davies in several songs, Melba pronounced her verdict: "You have a voice with big possibilities, but you must walk 'piano' for some time, and study hard."

Because Miss Davies had not heard her at her farewell, performance at Covent Garden, Melba let her hear some gramophone records that had been made without her. knowledge on that historic occasion. And they were really almost a perfect reproduction of her voice as it was that night, and even her farewell, speech came through as distinctly as it did when it rang through Covent Garden Opera House.

"New we'll have something to make the child laugh," Melba said in characteristic fashion as she turned on a record on a burlesque on broadcasting. She was talking about Miss Davies, but she enjoyed the fun as much as "the child" did.

A WEDDING of considerable interest to Australians took place yesterday in Paris, the parties being Miss Morva Davies, daughter of Mr. C. G. Davies, Manager of the E.S. and A. Bank, West Melbourne, and Mrs. Davies, and Mr. Adolphe Rolo, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rolo, of Alexandria. The ceremony was performed, at the British Consulate, the witnesses for the bride being Mme. Dinh Gilly and, Mme. Maurice, Muret, and for the bridegroom, his mother, Mrs. Robert Rolo, and his uncle, Monsieur Clement Green. After the ceremony, a reception was held by Madame Clement Green at her house, 27 rue Jacques Dulud, Neuilly, only a few intimate friends of Mr. and Mrs. August Rolo being present. Mrs. Rolo, who has been well-favored by the gods, seeing that she is young, very pretty, and gifted with a beautiful contralto voice, looked charming in an ensemble of dress, coat, hat, and shoes of porcelaine blue. She came to Europe three years ago to study singing, and after spending some time in London with Miss Anne Williams, came to Paris, where she has been studying ever since with Madame Dinh Gilly

LAST Spring she met Mr. Rolo, since when an attachment sprung up between them which ended in the wedding bells of yesterday. The honeymoon is being spent at Barbizon, after which Mr. and Mrs. Rolo will live at 'Le Lys dans la Vallee,' a famous auberge at Celles-St. Cloud, a charming spot just outside Paris. As Mr. Rolo is engaged with his father in business in Egypt, he is obliged to live, six months of the year at Alexandria, but as it is Mrs. Rolo's firm intention to continue with her operatic career, she will take advantage, of her husband's temporary absence to resume her work.

So far she has studied the contralto roles in 'Aida,' 'Samson et Dalila,' and different Wagnerian operas, and is hoping to have an audition at the Opera next year.
